One simple thing you can do to help us fight racism, On Monday

Looking for something simple you can do to fight racism on Monday?

A few weeks ago I was talking to a friend of mine and he said something so profound

“The higher you go the lighter the skin and the deeper the voice.”

all I could say was wow! that’s so true and so profound.

Now there are many reasons that this is true, and I don’t want to talk about whether it’s right or whether it’s fair. What I want to talk about is what you can do on Monday to change things…

See there are people in the world that are wicked. WICKED. WICKED.

Fight Racism on Monday

But what I’ve noticed is that most people are not evil or wicked, they’re just trying to make that paper…they want to make more money in whatever they’re doing and they often use a shortcut to get it.

I’ve lived in quite a few places in my life, and I noticed some interesting things.

For example, Africans (who have lived in Africa) who migrated to America will always celebrate when they meet other Africans. Like, if it’s a diverse place, some people may go as specific as looking for someone from their own Country or someone from their own state or city in that Country. But if you’re living in a place that’s not diverse, then just let someone mention that they’re from Africa and you’re hi-fiving and hugging and laughing together like long lost brothers and sisters.

I still remember my first visit to Connecticut where I met this older gentleman who was from Namibia. First of all, it was during thanksgiving where they have this marathon, and although there were hundreds of people (maybe even thousands of people), it was only a handful of black people present. But the moment the gentleman from Namibia and I made eye contact we started talking and then we found out we were both from Africa, we started shaking hands and laughing. I was there with one of my good friends, and he offered to buy us some snacks and drinks from the convenience store where we were standing. We were family.

Now if he had a job that he was hiring for, and I was qualified for the job, who do you think he would be more likely to hire? The person who doesn’t look like him? or me? the person who he was seeing as family?

Sometimes it’s like that for Brown people trying to apply for a job where it’s predominantly non-Brown people.

It’s not that the non-Brown people hate us, it’s just that they are used to their own, and so they have this shortcut that says, “make the safe pick – pick the person you are most confident in, don’t take a risk. You’ve never worked with someone like this before… how do you know they won’t disappoint you?”

So this is where you can help me on Monday.

This is where we need your help.

No matter how frustrating it may be on Monday, I am begging you to not quit working.

Now you may need to leave a job and that’s okay… but I’m begging you not to run to your own business just to get away from the awkwardness. Because yes it will be awkward, non-Brown people are not used to your beautiful Brown self. You do things differently from them, you think differently from them, you are different from them, and that’s okay, actually that’s what they need, but they don’t know it yet… right now they are afraid of different, because they haven’t gotten to really experience and appreciate you.

But if you choose to stay in the work world, and let people see just how fabulous Brown people like you can be… then guess what, they will be more willing to trust and hire more Brown people next time.

So can you do me this favor on Monday?

NO matter how challenging it may be, we need you to help us fight racism on Monday, just by choosing to stay in the working world, because the higher you go, the higher we all go.

Want to make work more interesting? Just add color

Want to make work more interesting?

I remember the day I went to work with a small pink waterbottle I bought for myself. Some of my colleagues laughed at me that I was bringing my daughter’s waterbottle to work… it was funny to me that because it was colorful and small, people automatically assumed that it was for a child.

When I saw this video, my heart smiled, because it reminded me why I love color so much… so if you’re having a challenging time at work, here’s a quick tip on how you can make work more interesting… all you have to do is add something colorful that makes you smile whenever you see it.

Enjoy 🙂

And there you have it!

What are your thoughts? Do you agree or disagree? What are some ways that you add color to your worklife?

4 Reasons to join the Pan-Africa Interior Design Summit | #PAIDSummit2018

When I just began as an Interior Designer Professional here in
Nigeria, I had so many questions. I wasn’t sure who to ask and how to
even phrase my questions?

I wondered if I would make it in the industry. I wondered if I should
work at an existing firm? I wondered if I should start my own
business?

How to get clients, how to present myself so that I would be taken as
a professional and of course I wondered if there was money to be
made…and if there was, would I make it? How do I brand myself? My
firm? Should I partner with like-minded people? I could go on and on…

At every step in my profession – I believe what has been key is
learning from others…I’ve always dreamt of having avenues such as The
Pan-Africa Interior Design Virtual Summit that gives me the
opportunity to learn from other successful professionals so I wouldn’t
have to make painful and expensive mistakes.

I’ve listed below 4 (of many) key things you’ll learn from the Summit:

  1. How to pick a Niche in Interior Design – Have you heard that phrase
“the riches are in the Niches?” Well it’s true. Picking a Niche can
sometimes be tricky. You want to pick a Niche that is going to be
enjoyable and profitable. And during the summit we have speakers that
will share their secrets on how they selected their riches, and 3
great strategies for picking and aligning into a successful Niche.
  2.  How to land a great job in Interior Design – If you’re just starting
out in Interior design, been working for a while or transitioning from
one industry into the interior design industry then you know how
challenging it can be. Great news! We have a speaker that will tell
you the exact steps they took when they transitioned, and 2 things you
can do today to help you get that first job in the right interior
    design field today.
  3.  What to know to start your Interior Design business – If you’re
someone who’s not quite interested in a job, maybe you’ve been working
for a while, and now you just want to start a business, then you’re
going to enjoy the session we have where the professionals share the
things you need to do to ensure that you have a sound business – how
    to attract clients etc.
  4. Strategies for Growth – Have you been an Interior Design for 1, 5
of even 10 years? Its amazing the wealth of knowledge some of our
speakers have brought on board! From business development strategies
to partnership and collaboration for growth.

I keep saying this and I mean it…its super exciting to be a host at
the summit, but more exciting for me is what I’m learning and how I
totally can’t wait to implement them into my business!

Now you see why I’m so excited about this summit.

There’s truly no stopping us* now!!!

The First Draft of your Virtual Summit should be pretty bad

I was reading an article recently that essentially said that “writer’s block” is just an excuse.

Because technically if we feel blocked when we are writing it’s because we are expecting what we write to be AH-MAZING the first time around.

It brought a smile to my face because this is what I’m always trying to explain to my clients.

See the first draft of your virtual summit should be bad- if it’s not bad you’ve probably wasted a lot of time thinking instead of testing and researching.

Let me explain.

When you are planning your virtual summit, the first draft will be the roughest idea, and possibly an outline, or a checklist of what you’re thinking, and what you would like to accomplish.

And then as time goes by we can fine tune the topic, or the speaker, or the marketing plan in order to meet what you want to accomplish based on the research findings.

If you wait instead for it all to make sense before you start drafting, you may never start drafting, or by the time you finally start your first draft, someone would have already accomplished what you wanted to accomplish.

So here’s your opportunity to create that bad first draft, and build something awesome from there.

Pick a date for your Virtual Summit and Work Backwards

If you find that you’re getting overwhelmed about it, the best thing you can do is pick a date for your virtual summit and work backwards.

Yes I understand that there are a lot of moving parts when it comes to virtual summits, and it’s easy to get lost in everything that’s involved.

But the advice I always give people is that they pick a date 2-6 months away from today, and then plan towards it by working backwards.

You can create your summit in 2 months but it all depends on how clear you are about your goals for the summit, and your speakers’ schedules.

Now let’s say you pick a day 4 months today, what you would need to do is go through your checklist of all the things you need to accomplish by then and then reverse the timeline.

If you don’t yet have a checklist, I wrote an article about creating checklists for your virtual summit here.

So let’s say your sample checklist is below:

  1. Decide on a topic
  2. Get speakers
  3. Create website
  4. Create promotional items…
  5. etc. etc.

You would then say in order for me to be able to launch 4 months from today then the website needs to be ready in 3 months, and the speakers need to be finalized in one month, and the topic needs to be decided upon in one week.

That way you will avoid feeling overwhelmed because you will know exactly what you need to do and when it needs to get done.

Your Virtual Summit needs checklists

Checklists Checklists Checklists
Your virtual summit needs checklists.

I remember when I first started running virtual summits and I would forget what I did in the one before that made it so successful

or I would make the same mistake that I made in a previous summit.

I wasted countless of hours because I wasn’t truly learning from the mistakes I had made.

That is…until I started creating checklists.

What exactly is a checklist? Well I’m glad you asked.

A checklist is exactly what it sounds like – I list of things you need to do to help you be more successful.

For example, when I realized that waiting until the end to start creating promotional materials was more efficient, I added that to the end of the checklist.

See sometimes speakers would be interested in the summit, but won’t show up, or some speakers would indicate interest at the last minute. So if you had already created the promotional materials, then you would need to recreate every single one, because now you need to remove or add names and pictures.

As you can imagine, I only had to make this mistake twice before I realized that it would be a more efficient use of my time if I just waited until closer to the launch of the summit to create the promotional materials.

In the virtual summits I have launched and helped others to launch, I have learned so many little things like that, and now when I look at my checklists I don’t have to keep making the same mistakes.

Atul Gawande in his book – The Checklist Manifesto talks about the importance of checklists when saving patients.

While it may at first seem like a nuisance, it can save time and lives.

While your virtual summit may not be about saving lives, if you’re interested in saving time, then you seriously need to consider creating a checklist.

If you’ve never created a virtual summit before, and you’re not sure where to start with your checklist here are a few things I would recommend you consider.

  1. Where do you need to research to pick the best topic for you?
  2. What are some great places to find the right speakers
  3. What are some tech (hardware and software) that you need for the interview and for the summit
  4. Who are some professionals you need to help you ensure that your summit is a success (e.g. graphic designer, copywriter)
  5. Where would you like to advertise?

I talk a bit more about things to consider when creating your first virtual summit in my book – Your First Virtual Summit, Everything you need to know

[amazon_link asins=’B06XBZRPDV’ template=’ProductCarousel’ store=’osayilasisi-20′ marketplace=’US’ link_id=’4e1be6ce-b744-11e7-b32a-dfd0da79b2c5′]

Once you’ve created your checklist, make sure you use it.

Use it when you’re not sure what’s the next step.

Use it to confirm that you’re sure what the next step.

And tweak it when you see that there is a more efficient way of doing things.

I hope I’ve convinced you that your virtual summit needs checklists
