Nigeria & Customer Service

Everybody in Nigeria complains of NEPA** (National Electric Power Authority), and everyone also complains about corruption and lack of an infrastructure in Nigeria. I agree all of those need to be fixed, but I think one of the things that really bother’s me is the customer service.

I don’t understand why some people are so rough and so rude. You’re trying to find out why they billed you incorrectly when all of a sudden the person snaps!

“Am I your maaate?! Do you know who I YAM?!! I will show you Peppe!!!” (Nigerian accent)

Then all of a sudden you have to start pleading because you can’t afford to be shown “peppe.” Your knees drop quickly to the ground.

“Oga…Ahbeg sorry oh! It was a slip of the tongue…please please ejo sorry e ma binu…”

you have to continue until you have pacified his ego…and then finally, perhaps after sliding a few Nairas under his palm, perhaps then, you will get some help.

Granted- it’s not always like that, but it always hurts when it happens.

…we have to learn to respect each other, and to appreciate the customer – let’s make Nigeria  a welcoming place for all.

Quick update: after posting this I was informed of the good news

“It is now PHCN – POWER HOLDING COMPANY OF NIGERIA. No more NEPA – NATIONAL ELECTRIC POWER AUTHORITY.”

Why are you so impressed with knowledge?

I visited a church the other day, and I made a comment and someone began clapping, but stopped quickly when the pastor gave him a quizzical look. It’s crazy to me! I only know what I know from what I have exposed myself to, and what I have learned. And you too can learn much more than what I know…because trust me the more you know, the more you realize that you don’t know…

We look at famous people who speak eloquently and wish to be like them, but we are not willing to put in the investment to know what they know. Do we care what books they read to get to the conclusion that they have gotten to? Do we care what kind of people they hang around? Do we care how long it took them to become the people that they are now? Do we even care if their character is comparable to their level of knowledge?

No! we just want to worship these people and act as if we can never be as smart as them. No my dear you are already very smart. Matter of fact the only reason you may not know as much is because you haven’t realized that you have access to so much quality information, and you are free to use that information, or alternatively you are too lazy to become the person that you were created to be.

Why don’t you do something this week that you have never done before…look up someone that you admire and find out more about their life. Get an autobiography if you can or read a book that they may have mentioned during a speech.

Remember as a man thinks in his heart, so is he…If you think that people that know alot are gods and that you are just a mere mortal doomed to ignorance, then you are. But if you think that you may nor know alot right now, but that you are smart enough to put in the effort, and that you are worth the effort, then you are.

Have a great week my dear!

Sin came a'knocking (a brief tale)

Greed came a’knocking at one, I opened the door and laughed mockingly;
Wine came a’knocking at two, I smiled, shook my head and away I walked;
Anger came a’knocking at three, I paused and paused, then slowly turned away;
Lies came a’knocking at four, I faltered briefly, but  instead said no;
He came a’knocking at five, with empty & silly promises, “not me” I said “not me;”

But he came a’knocking at six,

he came a’knocking with emptier sillier promises,

he came a’knocking with the right sensation — I let him in.

It’s often easy to tell people how to fix their lives, because their particular temptation may not be yours. But when we experience our own unique brand of temptation that makes us fall – the kind of fall that makes us beg, plead and grovel for mercy – we find that it is much easier to be gracious.

There’s never an excuse for sin. But I’m glad I serve a gracious God.

Happy New year!!!

Yes! We did it! We made it through 2010 and now it’s 2011!

Some of you may have new year’s resolutions, things you plan on doing, and things you plan to stop doing!

Remember that you can achieve anything you set your mind to do!

Go for it! Share what your plans are on the blog…Don’t be afraid to fail, don’t be afraid to dream big…don’t think that if you don’t accomplish your goal people will laugh at you…You will most likely accomplish something even greater…So I’m giving you permission to do great things!

Lets do better in the new year

It’s almost 2011 and I’m thinking of all my new year’s resolutions…one thing that comes to mind is writing more…writing better…writing clearer…

So I thought I would make a list of 3 common grammatical errors that we should try to avoid in the new year

We often use the first word when we really mean the second word.

  1. Your instead of You’re– as in You’re the best, this is a contraction of You are, while “Your” is possessive like My (i.e. your sweater, my sweater)
  2. There instead of Their – as in Their car, this is possessive- they own the car, while “There” means not here.
  3. Loose instead of Lose – as in I’m about to lose my mind (you probably already lost it), while “Loose” means not restricted…i.e you may lose your keys, but you may have a loose key on your table

Have a spectacular new year! I wish you better than your wildest dreams! Thanks for sharing 2010 with me and making it such a great year.

I don't like my lunch

I’m sitting in the break room with my lunch buddy at work and I take out my lunch, and a look of disappointment is on my face. I don’t like my lunch. The veggies smell funny, and I’m not in the mood for a wrap, I want some rice instead. I warm up my lunch looking really sad and wondering if I will ever get something I like for lunch instead of this unappetizing stuff I always seem to find in my lunch bag…

Sooo you may be wondering, why don’t I just tell whoever makes my lunch not to put “unappetizing” food in my lunch bag…yeah well it may surprise you to know that I am the one who actually makes my lunch every morning, or the night before. And I am the one who goes grocery shopping and picks the items that I will fill my refrigerator with, which ends up being what ends up in my lunch bag…I know I know by this time you think that I am just a silly silly woman! Whatever! (sniff) you just don’t understand…

But don’t we all do the same thing…we show up for a job we don’t like every morning as if we are forced to be there. We spend money we don’t have, then frown and get disappointed when we get the credit card bill. We stay in a relationship that is not that great just because we don’t want to be alone, then get disappointed when things don’t work out as we expected them to.

Why don’t you do something this week that you have never done before…take an inventory of your life and find something that you don’t like and is not a positive experience – your weight, a relationship (friend, family etc.), your job, your money – and do something about it.

Remember as a man thinks in his heart, so is he…so if you think that you are miserable and you will always be miserable, then you are. But if you think that you can change that thing that is causing you misery to something positive, then you can.

Have a great week my dear!

Merry Christmas

In honor of Christmas this week I just wanted to share with you all that I hope you remember the reason for Christmas.

Jesus came to die for our sins, and he rose again on the third day! (Praise God)

Don’t focus on trying to “outdo” one another with gifts…focus on your family instead…let them know how much God loves them and how much you love them!

Let them feel like there really is no place like home! Enjoy!!!
